pasturing horses in winter
Wintering your horse out.
Wintering horses out. Horses that are in good body shape with no health problems will winter out good. A horse will eat snow in place of water. Do not turn a young, old or a horse with hoof problems out to winter.
Turn out horses between 4 to 19 years of age. Do not turn out a horse that is still loosing teeth, they do not do good outside. If you turn a horse out that has never wintered out before, check regularly on the horse. It might take one or two winteres for the horse to learn how to make a living. Thing to watch for are...no snow for water and a layer of ice making it too hard to paw threw for the horse.
